My students need a classroom rug that we can all sit on for morning meetings, read alouds, and end of day reflections. We also need non-fiction magazines to learn about a variety of topics. WE need Time for Kids and Scholastic News magazines.
My school is a Title 1 school where 100% of my students receive free breakfast and lunch everyday. Some don't have backpacks and some are missing essential school supplies, but each of them bring a love for learning when they walk though the door.
Our future leaders, doctors, and soccer stars show their willingness to overcome hardships each and everyday!
Many of my students have parents who work multiple jobs (day and night) to provide basic necessities. When they come to school, the environment should be warm and inviting.
These students deserve to have a comfy place to sit and access to rich learning materials. These items help build a foundation for learning which shapes these kids into life-long learners!
Even though home-life may be hard, coming to school shouldn't be. It should feel like a safe, loving, and supporting home away from home.
My Project
Students should be exposed to many different types of texts. One type of text my students don't have enough of is...magazines. I'm not talking the gossip ones we find at the grocery store, although many of them watch their parents flip through them, I mean text feature rich non-fiction magazines.
These magazines allow students to switch up their reading styles and fall in love with the non-fiction world!
The magazines are also helpful in merging reading with math, science, and social studies topics! Each month we will receive a new set of magazines that we can relate back to a classroom theme to keep the learning exciting and engaging.
While we're flipping through these pages with glossy photographs, we need a place to sit back and relax. Students learn more when their absorbed in what their reading. They become absorbed when they feel relaxed and are comfortable. When this happens, it allows students to become inspired and continue to grow!
My students need to have a rug that allows them all to fit and soak up the knowledge of their new non-fiction resources...MAGAZINES!
