My classroom is made up of thirteen eager kindergarten and first-grade students with disabilities. Our school serves students in poverty.
As a Title I school, we are used to going without, yet our students still have the same needs as others, if not greater needs.
More than three-quarters of our students are from low-income households, which means that seventy-six percent or more of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
My students come from families that cannot provide any of the supplies needed for our school, so we often make do with what we have. This means that we are unable to purchase the things that would better assist my students who have severe learning needs. Despite this, we have passionate learners and teachers who are dedicated to providing the best education possible to our students.
Everyday my kindergartner/first grade students learn different reading strategies that help them become independent readers. Students are expected to read independently for about 10-15 minutes each day. Once they learn the strategy during Reading Workshop, they go back to read books independently. They are also required to read each night. At the present time we do not have enough grade level books to send home. They are in need of leveled books to bring home each night. That is why this project is essential to my students. Students need access to interesting, engaging and leveled books to CHOOSE from.
I want them to learn and to love to read.
This project will help support the needs of these children. They will have access to tons of leveled books. Students will be able to choose from different types of books and it will encourage reading independently at home and language growth as they will be exposed to vocabulary words within the books. In addition, they will continue to practice the reading strategies taught independently with these leveled books.
My goal as a teacher is to help students become better readers and with your help, we can provide students with great books to read, learn and fall in love with reading.
