This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Ninth grade is such a pivotal time of change and transition. Most of the children in our district do not experience middle school because our elementary schools serve K-8, so the transition to High School can be a tough one.
In my classroom, I pride myself on making that transition comfortable, successful, and thought provoking.
We spend a lot of time discussing identity and how our past can influence our present. This can be very challenging for a young person, but I believe that developing a sense of self can foster empathy, plus a healthy critique of ourselves, will support this crucial time in a young person's life.
My Project
Simple materials, such as a functioning pencil sharpener, are essential to a successful classroom experience. Larger, luxury items, like an area rug and reading lamp, help create a calm classroom environment where the students feel more comfortable to take academic risks.
The students that I serve are low-income.
Having little touches like a reading chair, can show them that they are more than just a test score. This reading area can also help students who need more isolation when trying something new or challenging. This reading area can help students focus by themselves and create smaller sub-communities within the classroom.
