I teach in a rural school that has few resources. The power of education hasn't been emphasized in this community, as most students go on to work in the family business when they graduate. However, students here are strong, interested in new ideas, and have so much potential.
It is through reading and building relationships with students that I aim to build a love of learning.

My Project
I work with many unmotivated and struggling students but have found that giving my students a choice in their team and the work they get to produce to demonstrate meeting learning standards has led to higher engagement and ownership of learning.
Collaboration doesn't have to be an abstract idea.
My students already work in their own student-led groups. They need the materials to be able to continue to do so effectively. The large sticky paper and sticky notes will help them track their group's project goals and deadlines, and can also be used for a multitude of other tasks, like collaborative writing, station rotations, and brainstorming. My classroom is also moving toward small reading groups to meet the interests and needs of all students, and they will require sticky notes an bookmarks to annotate and mark their spots. Finally, as we move toward project-based learning and instilling those "soft skills" we all hear about that are vital to today's society, projects and displays of mastery continue to evolve into more than a simple essay, and I welcome and encourage it in my classroom! The markers, colored pencils, and other "art" supplies will be used to replenish a diminished stock and will be integral to demonstrate understanding and put forth ideas in a variety of more creative methods than a simple book report or essay.
