This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have one of the greatest jobs in the world, educating students with special individual needs. I have committed my life to being an advocate for the educational needs of all special needs students through the provisions of appropriate and effective instruction. My students are my heart! I enjoy walking in the building in the morning. Several of my students have learning disabilities. However, I instill within them that we are all going to be productive scholars in life, it's just that some of us learn a little differently than others, and that's what makes us all special in some way. I am constantly teaching them correct manners, and how to appreciate even the small things in life and how to always say please and thank you. I service all of my students in their classrooms, as well as in my resource classroom. They are very lovable students and their parents are very supportive.
My Project
I would like to start a book club for my special needs students, to introduce them to African American authors. This will allow them to realize that there are authors who looks just like them in the world. I truly believe this will encourage them to want to read and write more. We will read the books in a small group setting and we will discuss it in the group. Next, we will relate it to how we live our lives today, to make a real life correlation between the two. During the reading sessions we will have candy and caprisuns to make it more inviting for the students.
By funding this project it will also allow for our Special Needs students to realize that African Americans have played a tremendous part in the past and present of our Nations History.
Having a book club will be beneficial for them in developing a love for African American Literacy.
