The sixth graders just completed a two-week summer program in which they read the novel, Nightjohn, by Gary Paulson. (Nightjohn tells the story of Sarny, a female slave secretly being taught to read by another slave.) The students loved the story of Nightjohn and are dying to read the sequel, Sarny. They've asked the teacher to borrow her copy of the book and have asked numerous questions about what happened to Sarny later in her life. We'd like to use the book in every reading class in the 6th grade. Some students would read it independently and others would listen to it read aloud, depending upon their reading ability level. There are currently 80 students in the sixth grade and all of them would need their own copy of the text. The vast majority of the students are genuinely excited about reading this powerful novel about an African-American woman recently freed from slavery and her mission to find her children and to teach others to read.
