Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"You gotta read, baby, read..." that is how our reading chant starts. Not only do I believe that reading makes you smart, I am working hard to bring reading into my science classroom.
I have the opportunity to teach 6th grade Earth Science in a Title 1 school with 93% of my students receiving free and reduced lunch.
My students are, on average, 3 years behind in their reading skills. One of my classes has only 2 readers on the 6th grade level, none above grade level, and 5 students on the 1st grade level. The 6th grade is 57% English-Language-Learners, which makes literacy incredibly important.
My Project
I have changed my curriculum this year to include a non-fiction research part of every unit. Students develop their own question, employ non-fiction reading strategies and write a "research paper" to answer their question. In order to make this happen, I need to add more books to my classroom.
Please help give my students access to the books they need to improve their reading level.
My students are brilliant and bold, help them reach their full potential by providing the most important thing of all: BOOKS!
