Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in East San Jose in a low income neighborhood. Once predominantly Latino, the neighborhood is becoming more multicultural. My kindergarten students are energetic and eager to learn. A favorite part of their day is story time.
The kindergarteners are emerging readers, so it is important for them to have books read aloud to them.
I encourage families to take their child to the library and to read daily to them as part of their homework. Many tell me it is a challenge for them.
My Project
In class, students develop comprehension strategies and skills through read alouds. At school, I am the reader. In addition to modeling these strategies and skills, I am exposing students to fluent reading.
I would like to build a home-school connection through literature books.
In order to do this, I will need bags for each student and some literature books. Students will take home a literature book with an activity guide in a bag. Books will be rotated on a weekly basis. Someone at home can read the book to the child and complete the activities related to the story.
Parents and other family members can also be reading models.
