Our world is ever changing, and text books, especially the ones with which my students are provided, cannot capture those changes. In order for my students to truly learn about other countries and cultures, they need authentic literature, not the outdated text books that still reference the U.S.S.R.
My students come from a variety of cultural backgrounds, which I like to try to highlight in my instruction.
My school district is in a low socioeconomic area, and too many of my students fall into the "homeless" and "free lunch" categories. They do not have much support at home in terms of getting help with their homework, so my lessons need to be powerful and memorable.
My Project
The resources I requested range from aids for direct instruction for my entire class, to independent work activities for individuals and small groups. I'm requesting materials which teach to a variety of learning methods; kinesthetic, verbal, visual, auditory. With these materials, my students will learn not only basic map and geography skills, but also the social skills of tolerance and respect.
My students are currently provided with a social studies text book that is out-dated and does not reflect their population.
My students come from a variety of cultural backgrounds, however, the children pictured in their text book are mostly Caucasian. They cannot learn about the real world from this book. The materials I am requesting will encourage my students to grow into well-informed, well-rounded adults.
