Celebrate Black Teachers and Students
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend a Title I school in Pennsylvania, and all receive free or reduced-price lunch and breakfast. They attend a typical, inner-city school. Most face serious obstacles before they even walk through the doors in the morning. Our goal is to make our school a safe and loving environment.
Our students come from diverse backgrounds and different countries. This makes our school pretty special in so many ways. The students all work so hard and are very deserving of this project.
My Project
My students have never had the opportunity to sit and read for enjoyment. I started recommending books and talking about them in class, and now I have a group that can not get enough. The problem is we do not have access to new materials. I want to see my students grow into avid readers, and these books will help so much. They will be able to take them home and read on weekends and holidays. They can then come in and exchange their books for something new. If I can instill the love of reading in one or two students, I feel like this is a success.
