Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My library students love to learn! They are a diverse group of children, with inquisitive spirits and have energetic personalities. One of their goals is to become Lifelong Reading Lovers! They need some encouragement as they work towards this goal.
I have started monthly reading challenges that will encourage them in their reading for pleasure....not related to classroom work.
These are School Library challenges, simple and fun.
As they complete their challenges, they will get to choose book-related prizes from a Reading Treasure Chest. We need help buying these prizes, as we hope for many trips to the treasure chest.
My Project
Yes...we are giving prizes for reading. But we are hoping to ultimately develop the love of reading in these young readers. The challenges will encourage students to try books that they normally wouldn't gravitate towards, thus expanding their literary horizons! Students who don't normally read for fun will have a fun incentive to start doing so.
These monthly challenges will also increase student knowledge of that month's celebrations and holidays.
For example, "Read a book about Martin Luther King Jr. in honor of MLK Jr. Day (January 20th)."
The challenges will be simple and relevant, with a space beside each challenge for a parent or guardian to sign. When the entire sheet is filled out, the student will bring the challenge in and choose a prize.
