My students need to read and create! Help us add books, microphones, and an Osmo Genius Kit to what we have, so that we can create video, podcasts, design challenges, and participate in book clubs.
My students are a very diverse community set in an urban K-8 school. This group of 3rd to 8th graders are close knit but diverse in socio-economic backgrounds and ethnicity.
My students are creative, curious, empowered learners that enjoy collaborating.
Most are voracious readers that constantly need more choices for independent reading.
Our library is small, but working to give students exciting book clubs with new books and a MakerStudio where they can wonder, make and collaborate in various mediums, exploring all content areas: French, Music, STEM, STEAM, language arts, social justice, digital citizenship and information literacy.
My Project
The objective of my project is to add a few things in phases to what we already have that will catapult our ability to create, and not just consume, in the library.
We strive to create a community of collaboration in our library media center, by establishing a MakerSTUDIO and BOOK CLUB, specifically for our 3rd-8th grade students.
By adding microphones, we can create podcasts and voice overs. By adding mounting arms for our iPad, we can create video and slow motion animation. By adding a collection of new books we can start a community book club.
I would like to start extracurricular book clubs that invite the community to read alongside our students ---parents, school board members, grandparents, teachers, staff, community members, and neighbors.
The MakerSTUDIO and BOOK CLUB support the mission of the library to enable lifelong learning and support knowledge creation.
Big Picture: to elevate the Library Media Center as a learning centered space in our Woodlands School community
Goal for 2017-2018: to strategically add items to the MakerSTUDIO that promote tech integration, creation of videos, design thinking, increased collaboration and community involvement with book talks and the establishment of a book club with the 3rd to 8th grade students.
Looking ahead: the Library Media Center will continue to add technology and engineering items that further help it become an integral part of learning and innovation for all.
