My students are hard working 6th graders in a south shore suburban town. We have one school for the town and the background of students varies. As is true in most schools, there are those who sometimes need motivation and inspiration to make the most of their education. Engaging methods and activities can help them to become more mindful of their own learning.
Celebrating and teaching about differences has become a focus in our school, allowing for students to be more understanding and to tap into their social-emotional learning.
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
My Project
I am asking for subscriptions to Scholastic News for grades 5/6 for each student I will teach in Social Studies class. Having Scholastic News access next year will allow my students to be able to read highly engaging articles and stories. This will help us tackle the rigorous common core standards with meaningful text, skills, and strategies. Students will be able to work together in groups and individually to get the most meaning out of these texts. These texts can bring to life areas on the other side of the world and link current events and history.
I want to teach students about civilizations and societies that have been created in the world historically, while linking the areas to current societies and events.
These weekly magazines will allow my students to comprehend meaningful texts and skills, which in turn will help them be more prepared for our standardized tests in the spring.
