My Students

Have you ever felt like you were being left behind or being held back? I have students in my 5th grade class reading on a 3rd grade level all the way up to 8th grade. It's very difficult to meet all their needs. That's why I need leveled nonfiction books to help meet the needs of all my students.

I teach fifth grade in a title 1 public school.

Most of my students come from homes with few resources, such as books and computers, that can enhance their learning. Few of my students have never left the city or state we live in. On the other hand I have some students who have had many more opportunities and resources that enhance their learning. As a result my students have different needs and abilities. Many of my students are reading below grade level, but they're still very eager and curious learners. All of my students love reading nonfiction books. They especially like anything science related and biographies. I truly believe that literacy and education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Given the right resources and opportunity I know my students can break that cycle and make a difference in their world.

My Project

I'm requesting 3 sets of nonfiction leveled books to meet the needs of my very diverse classroom. My students are reading from 3rd grade level up to 8th grade. These books will help my students improve their reading skills in many areas, reading comprehension, recalling facts and details, and sequencing. They will also gain knowledge in science and social studies. It is often difficult to keep struggling students engaged and on task because they are easily frustrated. My students love nonfiction, and these books will help keep them engage and on task. They will also go a long way in ensuring my students leave elementary school reading on or above grade level. The higher level book will challenge my students already reading on and above grade level. I believe that education is the great equalizer and the key to breaking the cycle of poverty.

Every child has within them the potential to do great things.

Curious and eager minds need to be nurtured, encouraged and fed. I truly feel that all of my students, given the resources and encouragement, can break free from the cycle of poverty. These books will help me meet the needs of all my students and ensure they all have the opportunity to reach their true potential. These books will not only help my students this year, but my students next year and in the years to come.
