Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach ninth grade English and intervention reading at a suburban high school. This project is designed to help add to the classroom library.
Choice reading books create engagement and community.
Help me to create a library where my students have the choice of a variety of texts including current texts and texts at various reading levels. I want to work to diversify my library so that all students can find the book that they can connect to regardless of their love of reading.
My Project
My students are struggling readers who struggle to engage in school. I am hoping to build my classroom library so that I have current books at a variety of lexile levels. Requesting book titles include The Hate U Give, Wonder, This One Summer, All American Boys, I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, The Book of Unknown Americans, Refugee, The Skin I'm In, and Legend. This will allow students regardless of their interest and reading abilities to find a book that they an connect with.
I have found that the more students connect independently with books, the more connected they are to English class and all of their classes.
I want to inspire students to read for fun and read to build their skills. It is so important for these students to see current titles that they enjoy.
