Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Young children have strong curiosities about our world and how it works. My kindergarten students need math and science big books that will engage them in learning about the world around them while also building the crucial literacy skills that they need for the rest of their lives.
My students are active learners who love to laugh, play, and be engaged in fascinating story telling.
They have a strong love for reading and love to be wrapped up in the magic of a good book. My school does not have the resources to send us on field trips where the students can see and experience new things first hand. Most of my students come from families that are struggling financially and may not be able to provide them with additional learning experiences. My students have bright and eager minds and they need as many opportunities for reading and exploring as possible.
My Project
With the use of these math and science big books, my students and I will be able to read about life science and early math concepts as a group in our classroom. The big books will have large, real life photographs that will draw the students into the learning and encourage their curiosity. The large text will be able to be seen by all the students, which will help me to teach them important literacy skills, like tracking and decoding words and reading comprehension skills. Big books are a vital part of the early childhood classroom, but unfortunately, we only have a few big books and they are all fiction. Math and science big books would be a necessary addition to our classroom considering the Common Core State Standards and their push for increased nonfiction reading in our classroom. They are appropriate for my young students because they are engaging and perfect for the interactive way that we read in our classroom.
This project is important because I want to give my young students the math and science background that will prepare them for the rest of their educational careers but also encourage continued and lifelong learning.
My purpose as an educator is to prepare children to be skilled and productive members of society. In order to do that, I believe our young students need reading skills to successfully navigate nonfiction text so that can continue to learn about math and science as they grow.
