I will be teaching third grade at Swift Elementary in Chicago in the Edgewater neighborhood for the 2005-2006 school year. Edgewater is an extremely diverse area and the students in my class are from various backgrounds making our class a melting pot of ethnicities. I teach every subject, however, I believe reading is fundamental for all learning. It allows students the ability not only to gain knowledge on many subjects, but to use their imagination to learn about others who may have had similar or different life experiences. I will be teaching a Math program called Everyday Math for the first time this year. It is a wonderful program that allows kids to explore math from many different angles (pun intended). I had difficulties learning math when I was a child, and I am always searching for new ways to make math more accessible to students who may be going through the same frustrations that I did. I am very excited about this new program because it seems to help me to find these new avenues. One of the wonderful things about Everyday Math is that it suggests, in the teachers manual, books to read aloud to students about the lesson that they are learning. I think this is such a wonderful way to excite students about Math. The picture books do not, however, come with the math series. I would love to have a set in my classroom library.
