My Students

My third graders are an enthusiastic group of learners. They are beaming with pride over their new acquisition of reading abilities and are excited to build upon that. They are at different levels of reading skills but their love of learning is universal. Being a Title 1 school, my students come from all walks of life. They have differing levels of access to academic resources but they are all motivated to make the best of what they have.

I am proud of the effort that my group of students put forward and my only wish is that I can support them, to the best of my ability, in their efforts.

I'd like to provide them with an array of books in my classroom library that supports their learning and keeps their interest level high.

My Project

My class is filled with diversity in culture, in ability and in personalities. What I envision is that we develop a sense of community and acceptance, while embracing each other's individuality. Being a 2nd year teacher, my library collection is a little sub-par but when it comes to books with multicultural characters and experiences, my library is severely lacking. Considering that my students come from so many different backgrounds, I want to provide them with mentor texts and reading material that "look" and "feel" like them in their lives.

Student lives will be enriched by reading books that have characters with diverse abilities and cultural backgrounds.

Whether this is due to cultural differences or abilities differences, every child should feel like they are being represented in our literature and in our classrooms. This collection of books focuses on teaching acceptance and appreciation of one another by great story telling and amazing visuals. These books will help my students understand that each one of us is unique and that we all bring something good to the table! Please help me diversify my library collection to meet the growing needs of my exceptionally enthusiastic students.
