My Pre-K students are four and five-year-olds who come from high poverty or English as second language homes. This year, my students are all learning virtually from home.
For most of my students, my classroom is their first school experience and they come with such an excitement for learning and trying new things, like working with puzzles, listening to a book, or painting.
I am privileged to watch them grow and develop skills in such a hands-on environment.
My Project
Whether I am teaching students face to face or virtually, I still need quality literature for read alouds. I strive to read three books a day to my class to expose them to new vocabulary and concepts. Big books make read alouds more engaging, because the students can see the illustrations up close.
Having materials like flannel board pieces to follow up an engaging read aloud makes students excited to retell the story.
The flannel board pieces will be in the listening center where students can listen to the story again and then retell with the flannel board pieces. For my students who are learning English as a second language, these props make a huge impact on their learning.
