Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class was fortunate enough to receive a set of 4 Tag Reader pens and they absolutely love using them. The pens make the readers come to life. They would really benefit from another set of pens.
My students live in a urban setting and attend a public school with a 92% poverty rate.
It is amazing to me that many of my students do not have books in their homes like I did when I was a child. I want to provide them with every opportunity to enjoy as many books as possible while they are in my care.
My Project
The Tag Reading system reads books to the children while they point to the words on the page. While this in itself is very exciting, the children are drawn to the books because they are about their favorite cartoon and movie characters. They can't wait to listen to them. While I have sets of books to share with them, I do not have enough Tag Reader pens for them to use in a reading group. I would love to work with the children in a group setting to find newly learned sight words and to have them learn how to find how text works in general. They can do things like find the beginning and ending of sentences, learn how punctuation is used, learn how text is read from the top to the bottom of the page, and many other common reading skills that my students do not come to school knowing since many of them do not have books in their homes.
Can you help my classroom become a place where children love learning because they can use the same technology that their counterparts in more affluent districts have available to them at school and in their homes?
