Help me give my students books they'll find themselves in. They'll connect with characters who look like them, or have problems they've had. These read alouds are often the only stories some of my children hear read aloud.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If you asked my 2nd graders what their favorite story is, you'd get several dozen answers, and someone would inevitably take you by the hand to our read aloud books corner. This is the treasure trove in our classroom.
My students have a growing classroom library and school library books to take home, but when they have independent reading time they all choose from our read aloud bookshelf.
Read alouds have inspired conversations, art projects, writing, even friendships formed by rereading these beloved stories with a peer. My students will read and reread books they've enjoyed, even if they are only able to sound out a few of the words. Our school is a Title I school in a large urban school district. Our hard working families have struggled to keep children engaged in learning throughout the pandemic, but the challenges of distance learning and technology created gaps in student reading skills and stamina. My little learners are determined, but need support.
My Project
Every day I read a picture book story or part of a chapter book to my second grade students. I've tried to collect a variety of books in which my students find someone who looks like them or faces challenges to which they can relate. These precious books inspire discussions in our class about race, perseverance, honesty, diversity, etc. They are treasured and reread by my students. In fact, rather than work on a learning website, often my children prefer to choose a well-used read aloud book to reread during their independent work time.
I'd like to build on my current read aloud library, and especially add some chapter books that have diverse characters.
I have precious few of those. I'd also like to add first stories in several chapter books series like Alvin Ho, Desmond Cole, or Planet Omar - early chapter books with ethnically diverse boy characters. These are great for "hooking" seven and eight year old boys in a enjoyable reading experience!
