My six and seven year old students take on school adventures with a smile and a growth mindset. We are nestled in a rural community. More than a third of students in our school come from economically disadvantaged families. All students in our district are offered free breakfast. Students within my classroom are surrounded with lack of structure and stability in their homes. Despite these facts, my students come to school eager to learn and to be surrounded by loving and caring first-grade friends.
We strive to grow our minds in ways we may have never imagined!
My Project
These books will be used as read alouds. Every morning and throughout the day we gather on our rainbow rug at the center of our room for read alouds. As I read I will periodically stop reading our book and have my students turn and talk to a partner about what they are noticing or to answer a question I have posed. My students will hastily turn to their partner and burst out their thoughts to sharing their thinking. Once we have read our books the book will be added into our classroom library. Our classroom library is a cherished area of our room. It is a cozy area of our room where students can get lost in their books.
Read alouds build a joyful classroom community.
These books will allow my students to transport to different worlds, those filled with diverse characters and settings. We can explore these different cultures, locations around the world, and historical time through these books.
With these books, my students will have more opportunities for collaborative conversations. My students love for books and reading will be fueled through these read aloud books. My students love being read to and I love sharing books with them. As we read more books together, we are building a foundation for future learning.
