Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am so lucky to be their 1st grade teacher! My students are very special to me for several reasons. They come from very diverse backgrounds. Some live in poverty, some have learning disabilities, and some have social and emotional needs, nonetheless whatever their background is, I try to give ALL my students the support they need to be successful in their learning. We learn from each other on a daily basis. My students are always curious, visual, and hands-on learners. They learn best when given opportunities!
My Project
Reading aloud to students frees them from struggling with vocabulary and decoding, so they can enjoy the text and get into a book. I am requesting books, flexible seating seats and pillows to keep my students engaged during read aloud. I always start doing a book picture walk and introducing new vocabulary words. Then, my students write familiar and unfamiliar words on the small whiteboards.
After read aloud, each student will go to the 15-drawer organizer cart and choose a graphic organizer.
Graphic organizers are simple yet powerful tools that can help kids who have trouble with writing. They show kids how to plan out their writing. Many of them are fun to look at, too.
