My students are very bright and eager-to-learn kindergartners who attend a public school in the heart of the city of Chicago in the Humboldt Park area. All of the students receive free lunch, and our school district is making record-breaking and heartbreaking cuts to the budget. The students are truly suffering. The majority of students in our school are below grade level and also below poverty level. They come from homes where education is not always a priority, but they come to school ready and eager to dive right in and learn.
Reading is the foundation in kindergarten. My students need amazing read alouds for the entire year. Help me give my students the opportunity to step inside stories.
Read alouds provide opportunities for my students to build a love for reading.
It helps my students build vocabulary, comprehension skills, and they are just plain fun.
Each week I like to read a new book with my students. Each day we have a new purpose for reading. This really helps my students to read and listen to the texts closely and complete multiple tasks focusing on a new skill each day. Each book goes along with a holiday, season, or just an important skill to learn for that week (or month ).
