The students in my class have not had the opportunity to read and learn from real world experiences. Through Scholastic News and Storyworks magazines they will be able to read about current events and use the knowledge gained as a springboard for informational writing.
I have a class full of eager nine and ten year old students.
They enjoy learning and are very active. They love to participate in class discussions and love hearing about current events around the world. Fourth grade is a year where they are learning many new and challenging things. They have jumped in with both feet and look forward to studying new cultures and learning about current events in the world, as well as, reading various genres.
My Project
Scholastic News is a "newspaper" written specifically for various grade levels. It covers current events around the world and also holidays and events that are not in our culture. I have had Scholastic News in my classrooms in the past and have loved the impact it has had on my students.
Storyworks is a magazine written specifically for third through fifth grade. It covers Common Core objectives such as poetry, prose, drama, and grammar skills. Storyworks engages the students because they love the fact that they have their own magazines to read. I love it because they are learning specific skills and enjoying it.
Our district doesn't have the funds to support our class getting Scholastic News or Storyworks. It will become part of our shared reading and writing curriculum. Through the Scholastic News and the Storyworks, the students will see firsthand what is happening in the world around them and have authentic literature to use.
By donating to this project you will be ensuring that our students have authentic literature to practice reading skills and nonfiction texts to learn about different cultures and current events from around the world.
