This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have the best students in the world! I know many teachers feel that way, but I truly love my kind, caring, motivated and compassionate students. I work in a low income environment, and my students have a variety of learning needs. I love to differentiate my lessons and do learning centers to hit every learning style and need. While in their centers, the students work in learning teams with different roles and responsibilities so that they practice the skills needed to cooperate and compromise.
My amazing students are learning academics but also discovering how to work with others to solve problems, accomplish goals, and develop their own strengths as well as bring out the strengths of others.
They are also learning how to overcome difficulties and challenge themselves to reach their full potential in everything that they do. Sometimes, we have to discuss how to bring ideas together to make one awesome solution or how to evaluate ideas to choose which one would be most successful.
My Project
Directions, recipes, news articles....in life, we have to read informational texts all day. We have to locate important information using text features like headings, captions, and bold words. Many students struggle with reading nonfiction and perform poorly on nonfiction test items. I want to change that!
I want to provide my students with biographies about inspirational people of all backgrounds and interesting historical topics to strengthen their abilities and increase their motivation for reading informational text.
We will use these texts for Google Biography reports, speeches, reading units, enhancing our social studies curriculum and cross-curricular units, and of course, reading for pleasure.
Students will be able to learn about amazing people like George Washington Carver, Malala Yousafzai, and Jane Goodall to inspire them and generate curiosity about the world around them. People like Rosa Parks, Anne Frank, and Frederick Douglass will inspire them to stand for what is right and show compassion, and people like Barack Obama and Pele will show them they can be anything they dream to be. Please help my students raise reading levels and learn about incredible role models while increasing their ability to comprehend informational texts!
