My students need BOOKS! I am requesting books that I can use during small-group instruction. Non-fiction books can often be hard to get students engaged. These selections would excite the kids!
I have the privilege of working with roughly 75 of the most resilient learners you could ever meet. My school is based in the heart of the inner city. The conditions these students are expected to thrive in would cause most of us to give up. Yet, here they are. Everyday my kids come in ready to learn and to prove anyone who doubted them wrong.
My students are my motivation and inspiration; They expect nothing and appreciate everything.
We are home to many immigrants, new Americans, and English Language Learners. Many of them have never been to a school, experienced plumbing or running water, or had an adult to show them that they matter. We have 17 different languages spoken throughout our school. Despite these variety of obstacles, our students do not struggle to grow and succeed at high levels.
My Project
These books would help me kick-start our classroom library. This year will be my first year teaching reading, so my resources are scarce.
I want to create a library that students truly enjoy.
My hope is to use these books for guided reading, as well as, for students to be able to read independently. The wide range of levels will allow students to find their "just right" book. Having books of high interest and at their level will help build their confidence as a reader. As said by one of my favorite authors, Dr. Seuss, "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you know, the more places you will go."
