Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 5th grade English Language Learners in an inner city school in Texas. We are a Title 1 school with 98% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. The majority of the students come from homes in which English is not spoken and parents are struggling to provide the basics.
The children have been in bilingual classes throughout their school years and are transitioning into English only instruction in 5th grade. While many have mastered basic English, the vocabulary and reading level required in Science is very difficult for them. They not only have to master the Science concepts, but the English required to understand high level, critical thinking questions on state mandated testing at the end of the year.
We begin tutorials early in the year to help students master the required concepts, but after a long day in class, they are tired and have difficulty focusing on the task at hand. Having high interest reading stories which focus on the concepts and Science games will allow the children to practice and improve their reading in a fun and exciting way. If they think they are involved in games, these practice sessions will seem less like work and more like play.
Your donation will make it possible for my students to master the Science objectives without realizing they are "working" and keep them excited about learning.
