Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are scientists. My students are mathematicians. My students are readers. My students are authors. My students are explorers. My students make discoveries each and every day.
Our Science Academy provides our students with a fast-paced and rigorous STEM curriculum.
It is our mission to provide our students with a challenging and inquiry-based STEM curriculum to maximize individual potential and ensure that our students succeed in a global community. Our goal is to expose students to as many learning opportunities that will prepare them for the future as possible, all while bringing to the forefront ideas and concepts that they may not have considered before.
My Project
During our third quarter, we focus on literature circles that tie into the shorter reading pieces we read as a whole class. Through this process we want students to either gain or continue to have access to interesting books that are relevant to their lives.
These critically acclaimed books are thought-provoking and will encourage reflection and conversation with other students, as well as potential action by the readers.
Our current literature circle titles focus on the Holocaust and World War II, but with the addition of these novels, students will have greater opportunities to learn from books that show just how these circumstances occur time and time again. Our students will be able to have discussions and produce solutions to how to help keep these events from happening again. These books will provide the segue to discuss topics that are often uncomfortable such as racism, cultural diversity, immigration and overcoming adversity. Can books save lives? We believe they can.
