Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my classroom have a variety of language learning disabilities. All of them have difficulty with reading, language comprehension and written output. We need to use a multi-modality approach when teaching them, however, the lack of materials doesn't always allow for this.
Imagine being handed a letter, book, report, instructions or directions and not being able to read them.
This is what my students struggle with in every aspect of their lives. School is especially hard for them because of this, so many get discouraged about coming to school. My students require the use of adapted materials, such as high interest- low level readers, graphic organizers, and use of visuals and assistive technology to access all aspects of the curriculum and learning.
My Project
Books, books and more books! We want to help our students to learn the foundations of reading and writing, while also keep them engaged and interested. We are requesting reading comprehension folders and cards and books. The multiple copies of books will help us to provide small group, guided reading instruction. Our titles include The Outsiders, The Chocolate Touch, A Week in the Woods and many more. It is often difficult in our low income urban school to get new materials. Often the case is that there aren't enough books for everyone in one small group.
The timers will help our students who have difficulty with time management, and the Eggspert controllers will help our student have fun participating while also teaching them not to shout out answers.
This will also help minimize behavioral issues from students, as well as help those who need to use time as a frame of reference.
The corner shelf will replace the milk crates that currently house our writing folders. They are unstable and fall over. It may seem like a small this but having a stable place for their work will help my students who need a sense of stability is so many ways,
