My Students
When students come to my room, they are absolutely certain of one thing: this is a place for reading. This is a place to curl up with a good book or to talk about what we've read recently. They are always welcomed to come browse our shelves for their next good book.
My students are generally reluctant readers and as a result, they've fallen farther and farther behind in their reading abilities.
When I first start working with them, they will all tell me they hate reading. As we start working together in our reading groups, they began to see that they don't actually hate reading - they just don't love every book they've read and they hate being forced to read books that don't interest them.
My Project
My students will be able to check out these books to use during reading time, whether in my room or in their classroom. My goal is to simply have my students read more, and that starts with having high quality books that they will want to finish. I've picked several series so that if they fall in love with the first, there will be others for them to read once they finish.
Many people who consider themselves "book lovers" can remember that first time they read a chapter book from start to finish - and were ready to devour another.
Through the use of high interest chapter books, I hope to give my students that same euphoria that I felt the first time I fell in love with a book. My hope is that if they find one book they adore, a whole world of similar books will be theirs for the taking.
