Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Think about coming into a kindergarten classroom with students who have varied ethnic backgrounds and whose primary language is not English. These students often need extra support for learning English but always manage to come to school with the biggest smiles on their faces. Every day, I teach my students the English language, as well as to read, write, and math concepts.
Many of these students do not have English language support at home.
I immerse them in the English language and help them become successful. My school prides itself on being able to bring students together for creative endeavors. With help from donors, we've already been able to fund multiple successful and engaging projects.
My Project
After getting ready for this new school year and organizing all of our leveled books, I realized we are low on some non-fiction books. My students are learning throughout the school year how to read, become avid readers and what the difference is between a fiction and non-fiction book. However, we hardly have any leveled non-fiction books and the books that we do have are falling apart that tape doesn't even hold them together. Having new non-fiction books in the classroom would greatly enhance my students learning all about non-fiction books and how non-fiction books teach the reader.
Having new non-fiction books will facilitate my students love of reading.
These books will help my students understand the difference between fiction and non-fiction books. Half of my class' population is ESL and having these books will help my students grow as readers.
