My students need quality materials to read, and therefore learn, about our second grade content.

My Students

Textbooks are things of the past! Students are now learning from Internet sources, teacher-created materials, and trade books related to the curriculum. I am trying to build a library of leveled trade books so that all of my students have equitable access to the curriculum.

My students are bright and inquisitive.

They have many questions and are used to being able to get answers! Our school is a large elementary school K-5. We are very proud of our diversity. We have a wide variety of students from many cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. We have an increasing number of students for whom English is a second language. We also have a large number of free and reduced lunch students. Often science and social studies are particularly difficult for these students. Some lack background knowledge, content vocabulary, or both. Within these groups and outside of them, we have students that are gifted and experienced. Teaching in this setting is both challenging and rewarding. Pairing up students for cooperative learning and paired reading is a teaching tool that has benefited the students in my classroom.

My Project

I am requesting content reading material that will help students build a deep foundation and a more rich contextual map of the topics that we study in the classroom. I have requested books that span the academic areas we study. From parts of speech to ancient Egypt, poetry to probability, I have tried to pick texts that will enable my students to learn from reading. I have paid mind to the varied levels that I have in my classroom in my choices as well.

I hope that I can find like-minded people that know the value of reading to learn.

We live in an an age where textbooks don't always meet the needs of the classroom. Teachers are able to customize their libraries to meet the needs of their students and their curriculum. I hope to do just that with your help!
