My Students
We have the best 1st graders at our school! We are in need of chapter books for our readers. During the first semester, our students grew many reading levels, and they have lots more to go. During 1st grade, students have to grow the most as readers than in any other elementary grade. My goal as a teacher is to ensure that students have opportunities to experience reading at school and through the summertime. In our Title I school, high poverty-population, students come in daily without books and have limited exposure at their homes. Our parents are working-class families that do not have time to take their children to the library or provide literature-rich opportunities at home. Our school is located in a urban area just 3 miles north of uptown in Charlotte, NC. Our students come to school happy, eager to learn and please their teacher.
My Project
We are requesting a grade level set of chapter books for our students to use while the teacher is teaching very important reading comprehension skills and strategies. The students need to apply the questioning and text evidence into context by using their own chapter book during our interactive literacy in 1st grade.
Each teacher would model necessary skills while students are able to apply them into their very own chapter books.
Students would then take these books home with them at the end of the year for summer reading.
We are so excited to provide this opportunity and to grow our students in a strong, social-emotional way as well!
