As an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher, my students have limited resources at home to be able to get assistance from parents. Most of the parents do not speak English and cannot help their kids with school assignments. The 6th, 7th, and 8th graders focus on academic English by building vocabulary through speaking, reading, listening and writing. The academic English language augments their success in their regular academic classes. The students are motivated to do well and parents are supportive of this.
The school is very new to ESL concepts with textbooks and other supplies still being very limited.
The school classroom still needs the ACCESS World History and English series as these are academic areas that are covered at middle school. These texts are modified specifically for ESL students.
In addition, all the students are tested via computer every year for English Language Proficiency (LEP) in academic areas. These students need to build academic English and computer skills to meet the demands of the regular academic classroom.
My Project
The World History series gives students in 6th and 7th grade comprehensible access to the demands of the social studies curriculum. The ACCESS English books assist all students in 6th through 8th grades to build their skills in the academic English Language Arts curriculum.
The ACCESS series books and activities will allow the students in ESL class to understand the academic content in their regular classes to meet the demands of the regular curriculum.
The vocabularies for all of the academic areas are covered in ESL class. The students must demonstrate mastery of the English Language through listening, reading, speaking, and writing in all academic subjects to be successful in the regular classroom.
The English Language Learners (ELL) students need textbooks and activities that are appropriately comprehensible for English Language Learners.
