This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at an urban, Title I school where over 90% of students come from low-income households. Federal funding provides free breakfast, lunch, and snacks for every student. Even with parental support, I would love to say that my students have everything that they need to be successful, but they don't. Our classrooms lack much of what is now considered standard in elementary school classrooms due to district and state under-funding.
Despite the basic inequities and challenges our 31 awesome third graders experience daily, they still come to school every day, excited and ready to learn.
In third grade, we teach 31 wonderful students. In their writing, they tell me about their favorite sports (fútbol), their favorite foods (pizza), and their various hobbies like styling hair. They are creative, silly, and love to try new things. However, many students are below grade level in both reading and math with roughly a fourth of students reading at a kindergarten/first-grade level. A growing number of our students speak English as a second language. Additionally, five students have diagnosed learning disabilities. My goal is always to meet students where they are and help them grow and achieve to levels they couldn't have imagined!
My Project
The instructions read "VERY IMPORTANT: ONCE A GAME OF JUMANJI IS STARTED, IT WILL NOT BE OVER UNTIL ONE PLAYER REACHES THE GOLDEN CITY." For the past two years, my class has kicked off test prep season by reading the story of Jumanji. This cautionary tale stresses the importance of reading the directions carefully. After we read the book, students are given a cryptic invitation to begin the adventure the following Monday. After school, I transform my classroom into a jungle and make each student their own Jumanji gameboard. When students arrive on launch day, they walk into a classroom filled with rain forest sounds and are are each given their own safari hat. As students review for standardized testing, they will receive gold tokens which they will trade in to advance on the game board. The only problem... when my students reached the Golden City of Jumanji, we have nothing to provide for their huge accomplishment!
This year, Jumanji will be back and better than ever with these new materials to transform my classroom into the ultimate lost city, favors for every child who beats the game, and an Osmo Pizza Co game to teach financial literacy!
Students will be fully immersed in the experience of Jumanji and have no idea that their hard work reviewing will lead to standardized testing success! Even more exciting- at the end of the experience, I plan to raffle off a Fire Tablet and an Osmo Pizza Co. game so that the skills practiced during our review time can continue being practiced all summer long!
