Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Pre K-5th grade, public, elementary school with over 500 students from varied backgrounds and diverse needs. We are a Title l school with at least 85% of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. The majority of our students are from low socioeconomic families, in a community that has pulled together to recover from the effects of Hurricane Harvey. Many students do not have access to the public library, after school clubs/sports, or learning experiences that are not incorporated within the school day. Our students are bright, inquisitive, and love to be active. They are always ready and excited to experience new activities, including STEM and other manipulatives. They are eager and very interested in experiencing new challenges.
My Project
As a Block (Specials) teacher who see students face to face on a weekly basis, I have been able to utilize felt boards to help make stories come to life. What I need help with is acquiring new felt boards and pieces that can be used in two other Specials classrooms on a rotation bases. With sharing my teaching time with the school counselor, having these teaching tools in the classroom will engage students in whatever Specials class they are in but still maintaining safety protocols with social distancing and no cross contaminations of materials in the classroom.
By using the story boards during Specials classes, it really will help reach students struggling with basic concepts and also social and emotional issues that our students are dealing with during this time.
With so many different story boards out there that focus on student' social and emotional growth, we (specials teachers) can focus on the needs of students who are having emotional difficulties during this time. We can use the story boards to help students self-esteem, explore relationships, and understand cultural diversity in the school setting.
