Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My program is a self-contained classroom which consists of 11 students who are on the spectrum for Autism. My classroom is designed for up to 12 students consisting of both kindergarten and first graders. My students have specific learning needs and require adaptations to the general curriculum materials in order to assist with their specific learning styles.
It is a necessity to adapt curriculum materials including reading books and other learning materials.
In order to appropriately adapt the materials and books specific resources that are not available by the school department are required including ink, lamination, Velcro, and magnetic tape which can become overwhelmingly expensive.
It is my desire to put in the effort to try to attain the necessary resources to provide appropriate curriculum materials which focus on my students' individualized needs for successful learning.
My Project
The specific materials requested are essential to adapt and modify the curriculum to reach my students at their current level. Lamination is used regularly to provide visuals and picture symbols and to create learning materials such as adapted books and hands-on activities. The lamination also serves as a way to increase the longevity of materials created for future use.
The Velcro is essential to create adapted/Interactive books which allow students the opportunity to practice fill in the blanks when offered a specific field of picture symbols.
The magnetic tape is paired with picture symbols up on the white board to present students with a white board activity/visuals on a daily basis. The white board markers are used daily to encourage practice with student writing.
