Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our student population represents the range of our city's cultural diversity and backgrounds. We serve students who are some of the most under served socioeconomically, disadvantaged(including those in extreme poverty), foster youth, and children who are homeless or experiencing housing instability. Our student body is comprised almost entirely of low-income students, with a majority Latino/Hispanic students as well as students who are Caucasian, African American, and Asian. We are unique in that we have a very large Title 1/EL student population.
Over half of our students are reading below grade level and are struggling with content area curriculum.
My job as a middle school reading intervention teacher is to not only teach these struggling readers the skill and strategies that they need to be good readers but also instill in them a desire to read so that they will have the tools they need to graduate from high school and the hope of going to college.
My students need easy access to books that are high interest but within their independent reading level so they can become confident readers and be successful in their content area classes.
My Project
My students need books that are highly engaging and easily accessible. I work with middle school students who struggle with reading and many of them have already decided that they hate reading and are not interested. My goal is to establish a daily habit of independent reading with them.
The donated books will help to create an environment that shows the importance of literacy and to help my students rediscover an interest in reading.
With these new books, my middle school students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own reading level.
