I am the speech language pathologist at Brunson Elementary school. Our school has an ESL program in it. A large portion of our ESL population have Spanish as their primary language. So many of our students are being referred to me for testing to see if they have a communication disorder. The only speech-language tests I have at my school are for English speakers. These tests require that students are proficient in the English language with a good understanding and use of English grammar, sentence form and sequencing of word order in conversation, as well as, the ability to read in English.
It is very difficult to identify when a child has a language/ communication disorder versus a language "difference" (he has not yet learned to speak English) when they are given a test in a language that they are still learning. I want to make sure students are correctly identified and are receiving the speech services they need. Also I want to make sure that a student is not identified as having a language disorder when, in fact, he does not. I am in great need of speech-language assessment tools in Spanish. These tests are given in Spanish with expectations for Spanish grammatical rules and language structure.
I also need some speech-language materials that have bilingual options so that I can work on language goals with students whom I serve who do not yet speak or understand English. It can make such a difference to be able to reach out to a child in their own language and respecting their culture. I would love to have materials that would enable me to incorporate hispanic culture into my speech-language therapy sessions.
It is so important that our students are given every opportunity to receive the services they need and to be able to reach their fullest academic potential. We, as educators, need to have the appropriate tools in order to reach each child's individual needs. Please help me to acquire the tools that will allow these special students to flourish.
