My students need access to novels, historical fiction, and informational text.
My students have lived through and had experiences that most of us didn’t even consider when we were in middle school and for some of us, even high school. The student population is on 100% free lunch, and we have an EL and SPED population that is in full inclusion with all other students. Here at V, we try to provide an experience that both educates and heals troubling past.
Very often as kids we could not wait to be grown-ups and this has not changed through the decades, but the “grow-up” process has advanced.
This is why it is remarkable to see excitement and laughter when their walls come down and they become students enjoying learning, as opposed to worrying about their image and falling into “dogma” (we just reviewed that word today).
At the end of the day, my goal as an educator is to provide my students with everything they CAN have, not just what is provided to them or what fits in the budget. Why is it that students who are economically challenged receive the most hurdles? My goal is to expand their horizons and show them what is outside of their few block radius.
My students and I are looking to expand our reading library and replace worn down class sets with e-readers. E-readers will not only expand the access of literature in the class, but will provide access to literature that will interest all students. My students need leveled readers and novels in languages that they can comprehend and expand their knowledge with. Very often class books are in the primary language of English and don’t lend themselves to our EL students.
What about the English Language Learners and Special Education Students?
What about the students who need to change the contrast of text? With E-readers we will not only be able to ensure equal access across all students, but prevent the consistent replacement of books that are worn down, torn, or having enough room to store them.
