Media Arts is a new, innovative resource that is coming to life in our school. This year we have been in charge of creating programming for our school website, district's website, Youtube channel and most exciting, for our local television cable company. Our students are so excited and have started many projects. Now, they are planning to teach younger students what they have learned. They plan to assist them in creating their own projects. Each project will have a moral or civic lesson. Awesome, right?
All of our Drama and Media Arts students are from poor homes as defined by our Title One School status (one hundred percent receive free lunch).
The demographics of the school is incidentally approximately ninety-five percent African American. The students are mostly from single-parent households. My students (ninth- twelfth grade) are bright, energetic, talented, and resourceful. My students love film making and this year, they have the ultimate challenge to produce programming that will be aired world wide.
My students are up for the challenge! However, we need some assistance from kind donors who want to make a true difference in the lives of our kids.
My Project
My ninth through twelfth grade students are so talented and giving. Presently, they have many opportunities to create, edit, and produce their original digital movies. However, editing can be a long process especially because our computers are really outdated, slow, and have little storage left. A new computer will assist us in creating the projects in a more timely manner. Although it is only one computer, it can be used for the most significant steps in the process of editing or producing film.
Although our students are classified or identified as "poor" according to their Title One status, you would not know it by the way they continually achieve, and give back to others.
It is not a surprise to me that they enjoy reaching out to others to assist them in becoming better citizens through digital filmmaking. That is their next idea. They would like to assist others with creating their own films. These films will have an impact on all of the kids working on the films, their peers and community that will view them. While teaching others, my students will get additional practice with the production process. They will act as directors, editors and producers of the digital films.
My students plan to mentor a group of elementary/middle school students and assist them in creating their own digital films. The films will have moral and/or a civic lesson. This is yet another project my students are leading so they can reach back and help kids younger themselves. I am so excited to see what they produce with the younger students.
