Increasing rigor in the classroom relies heavily on access to materials. My third grade classroom has access to books but by having six classroom Kindle Fire tablets, the children can be exposed to a variety of books through the Kindle Library, and our local Online Public Library.
My school is part of a large urban school district.
47% of my students come from low income families. The children in my class are eager to read, and I am finding that the classroom library does not support their needs. A Kindle would give them exposure to digital print technology and would help them become more fluent 21st century learners.
My Project
Each day, I meet with several small groups of students for Guided Reading. During this time, the Kindles would be valuable devices for enhancing learning. The Kindles would allow me to have six copies of a book that all children can be using. Students with special needs would have the option of listening to words spoken through the "text to speech" option. This feature would also help my second language learners. I could also increase the size of the text for students with vision issues. The Kindle allows children to tap a word to get a definition. This would enhance the children's vocabulary understanding.
Having a complete library of books at my fingertips will allow all students exposure to a variety of texts to meet the needs of every child.
I will also be able to change the way children learn by incorporating this technology.
