Mrs. Walsh from Brooklyn NY is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a variety of hand on science materials to further their understanding of universal concepts.

It is my belief that every child has the potential to learn. It is my duty to see to it that with patience, understanding and proper tools our special needs children can feel good about themselves, gain independence and become productive members of society.
I have six happy, verbal and non-verbal, autistic students, who love school and are trying very hard to please me and the demands put upon them.
My school is part of the District 75 community school, which services children with severe academic, communication and social delays. These children are with us as they would not succeed in a regular school setting. They need small group instruction, speech and language services and frequently physical and occupational therapy. They are lovely boys, very friendly, who need a lot of individual special attention and specialized, modified, repetitive instructions in order to master tasks. They learn best through exploration and hands-on materials as this gives them a chance to succeed. They love to have fun, so music and art are also part of our daily routine.
My children learn best by exploration. Science is their favorite subject and the materials in the science kits I am looking for will provide them with the opportunity to touch, feel, experiment and learn through play to understand the concepts of motion, magnetism, electricity, motion and buoyancy. They will use the resources in small groups under the guidance of an adult. They will interact with a peer to improve their socialization skills, learn to take turns, share and communicate with each other. The science materials ordered will provide them with the opportunity to be successful, so they gain self-confidence, which will lead to further inquiry. These children have a very short attention span and need the task variety and fun that comes with handling and experimenting. These resources will keep their interest and help them understand some quite difficult science concepts.
My children need to gain self confidence by successfully completing tasks.
These contributions will give them the opportunity to handle and explore a variety of science materials, so they can make sense of the world around them. They need the tactile contact and the many opportunities to repeat tasks over and over. It also gives them the opportunity to share the learning experience with partners in a small group in a fun and non threatening way.
