My students love to read and have varied reading levels. I would like a book shelf and a selection of books available to my students to encourage them to read more and improve their reading abilities.
Our school is located near a wetlands area just a few blocks from Lake Pontchartrain. I teach a self-contained third grade class with special education and gifted inclusion students. There are 21 students in my class. Our student population reflects approximately 23% students on free or reduced lunch; and, unfortunately, some of our students are in housing transition due to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. We have seven third grade classes (140 students) at our school that could share these materials.
I would like different levels of fiction and nonfiction reading materials that correlate to our basal reading series. The students will form "book clubs" to read and discuss their reading. I know that the more a person reads and discusses what he or she reads, the better the reading skills become. I want our students to build good reading skills that will last throughout their lives.
