Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every classroom is made up of a diverse community of learners but in our classroom every student is on a different level. Our special needs community of 12 kindergarten to second graders are all together learning how to be caring, compassionate members of our school community.

My students are from the Sugar Hill section of Harlem, NY.

Many are from foster homes. For some students, this is their first year ever in a school setting and they are extremely behind their peers academically. Other students are working on grade level but struggle with emotional disabilities that prevent them from being in a main stream classroom setting. All students in my class have disabilities that cause them to be unable to work independently. With only myself and a paraprofessional in our room this makes individualizing students educational experiences extremely difficult.

My Project

It is our hope that we can provide the individualized education experience that each child needs to help them meet and progress beyond the level of their peers. "Blended Education" is an Ondine program that has been extremely successful in other "bridge classes" -- special needs classrooms that include children spanning many different ages, grades, and special needs. It uses technology and special soft ware --similar to Khan Academy-- to provide students with engaging lessons on the computer and through audio devices while the teacher works in very small groups (from 1-3 students) addressing each students individual needs. To be effective, every student needs to be working with the software for 30 minutes a day and using the audio devices fifteen minutes a day. With only one computer in our room and one CD player, that is currently not possible. However, with your help, every student will be able to spend the time they need using the computer program.

Only 15% of students in self contained classes graduate from high school.

It is our hope that this new strategy will help change that statistic. Aside from science, social studies, and caracter building, it is virtually impossible to create a whole group lesson that addresses every student's need in our classroom. Our online Blended Learning program will allow us to meet each student where they are at and give each child the specialized education that they have the right to receive
