I teach 22 eager third graders in a very diverse community. My school encourages each of these children to be active members in this community, as well as life long learners.
In my classroom, we have just received a document camera and projector from generous parent funds. However, these tools are reaching their minimum potential because the cords do not reach to my desktop computer.
I have been using my small personal computer screen to display animated math problems and lessons. Our math program has a huge technology component that I am unable to take advantage of due to the lack of accessibility in my classroom. I would love to be able to reach my visual learners with this component of the program. I have several English Language Learners in my classroom, and I feel that seeing the animation would engage them and help them learn some of the vocabulary needed.
Discovery Streaming is also a program I use often that helps bring abstract science and social studies concepts to life through instructional videos. These videos download onto my personal computer, but I have no way to show them to a large group of students because my computer screen is so small. With a laptop I can connect to my projector and reach all my students quickly and effectively using a variety of mediums.
My students have been working in the computer lab to research and create a Power Point presentation on a planet of their choice. However, my students are going to have to make their presentations on our TV screen that is far out of their reach because that is the only resource connected to my computer. This will also make it very difficult for the other students to see the presentations.
With a laptop, I would be able to engage and motivate my students with creative and innovative lessons. I would also be able to bring the world and more into our classroom. This technology would also help prepare my students for the future by giving them the skills needed to use the internet and other programs such as Power Point. Thank you for helping me provide a 21st century learning environment in my classroom.
