Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are the best part about being a teacher! Each one of my students has a unique story to share with the world. Working at a low-income school, we get students from a plethora of countries. Some who are brand new to the country and others have spent time in refugee camps. They all come in with their own unique story and struggles. Being able to listen to each other’s stories and embrace what makes us different binds my classroom into a family. Each student no matter ethnicity, culture, gender or even language barrier works together.
For these types of students, it is essential for them to feel like a part of a community that cares and respects each other.
They need to know that that they have a place that they are safe and loved. Building a community in a classroom where many languages are spoken can sometimes be difficult. But, when it comes together, and every student is working together on a project or a discussion it gives me hope.
My Project
The students in my classroom have never been able to go to a planetarium. With this project I will be able to bring the planetarium to the classroom!! Students need to be able to see real life applications of skills taught in the classroom. With the lights off, the solar system projector will transport students around the solar system. The model of the solar system will give them a point of reference as we move through the lesson.
The students will be able to walk among the stars that they learn about.
I want to make sure my teaching is an experience and not just a boring day at school. These items will engage every student that I have in my classroom no matter the language barrier. I want to be able to see the wonder in all of my students' eyes. When students are able to achieve success they should be rewarded, and what better way than with bendy pencils! To make sure that we are all covered, we need Band Aids for the classroom.
