Our class is made up of sixteen autistic students with varying abilities. Our day consists of reading, math, language arts and social skills. We also have scheduled various times throughout our day for sensory breaks to help students maintain their focus during academic times. My students are very energetic and happy students. They come to school every day ready to learn and they try hard on each task they are given. Each student is a true individual and excited about learning new things. Every day they work hard during academics but they also play hard during free time and recess. During social skills they students get a choose a game or activity and are excited to choose an activity with their friends.
When I learned about the MindSpark Learning Institute Conference on Creativity and Innovation for the Summer of 2019, I immediately reflected on how I could go to this event. After teaching for over 18 years, I continue to need to find the spark to engage my students, rejuvenate myself and create a learning environment that I would want my own children to be a member of. In attending this conference, I will be able to learn to create a culture of creativity based on innovation. I will be able to redesign the use of incentives within the classroom. And I’ll explore best practices to keep students actively engaged. Attendance would be beneficial to both myself as an educator and my students. I get excited just thinking of the possibilities!
