Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a low-income school at which nearly every student is a part of our free/reduced lunch program. As a special education teacher, each of my students has a disability that not only brings diverse strengths to my classroom, but that also highlights the challenges they face on a day to day basis.
My students are a colorful Rubiks Cube of joyful, complex thinkers who are hungry for new challenges--but they are easily distracted by their cell phones during class.
My Project
I'm a firm believer that technology in a classroom is a game changer. As a middle school teacher, I am constantly pushing myself to learn, adopt, and integrate fresh technology resources into my lessons as often as possible. My tech-tastic teaching style is effective at engaging learners, but it is no match for the addictive nature of cell phones. No lesson, no matter how brilliant, can capture a student's attention while he is receiving endless notifications from Facebook, Snapchat, and Twitter.
I want to support my students in becoming responsible citizens of a digital world.
I'd like to be very clear about this project: I in no way want to take technology out of my students' hands. Instead, I want them to focus on using technology as a tool for learning, rather than as a way to waste time. If I can encourage my students to put their cell phones in a safe place during my class and use their Chromebooks instead, I know I can reach more of them and improve their overall achievement. Thus, the cell phone recharging station idea was born.
Here's the plan. I will use the chargers and cords requested to create a student charging station. Upon entering my classroom, students will have the option of "surrendering" their cell phones to our charging station. If they choose to make this decision, they will receive an extra credit point (and will naturally be more engaged in the classroom as a result!). The incentive of being able to charge phones during class will encourage many to participate. As soon as class is over, they can unplug, take their cell phones with them, and be on their way.
